Where is Jared Fogle from Subway now? His prison life and future hopes

Jared Fogle’s use of Subway offerings to lose 245 pounds sparked a collaboration that would earn Fogle millions of dollars and make Subway one of the most successful eateries in the world. For 15 years, Fogle appeared in over 300 commercials for Subway, earning him the title Jared from Subway. 

While sentencing Fogle to 15 years and 8 months in prison for receiving child pornography and engaging in sexual misconduct with a minor, federal judge Tanya Walton Pratt admonished Fogle for squandering the opportunities he got from his Subway association. 

“The level of perversion and lawlessness exhibited by Mr. Fogle is extreme,” Pratt said. 

Jared is incarcerated and looking forward to his release in 2029

Allegations of Fogle’s sexual misconduct against minors emerged in 2007, but an investigation by the FBI into Jared’s conduct stalled due to insufficient evidence. The probe resumed in 2015 after the FBI’s investigation into Russell Taylor, the Jared Foundation’s former director, yielded evidence against Jared. 

Fogle decided against a jury trial, which would’ve opened him up to a 50-year sentence. He agreed to a plea deal that required him to pay his 14 victims $100,000 each. The prosecution agreed not to seek more than 12 ½ years, and he acquiesced to a sentence of not less than five years. 

However, Judge Pratt handed a sentence higher than the prosecution’s recommendation, citing the extreme nature of Jared’s crimes. Prosecutors in New York considered filing statutory rape charges against Fogle but decided against asking the victims to retell their stories. 

Jared’s attorney filed appeals against his sentence, but the courts refused to reduce Fogle’s jail time. “Not a day will go by that I don’t think about them [his victims], what I did and the impact on their lives,” Fogle said. 

Fogle is incarcerated at a Federal Correctional Institution in Englewood, Colorado. He’s declined interviews, but in November 2021, he sent a letter to the New York Post detailing his life in prison and eagerness about his release. 

Jared said he’d adopted a fitness regimen, including a 4-5 mile daily run. “I am the most healthy and in-shape I have ever been,” he wrote. “I snack on granola bars, nuts, and protein bars. I feel really good physically and mentally.”

Fogle said he spends weekends watching football, reads the New York Post, and enjoys reading historical fiction. He continued:

“I realize I royally screwed up to wind up where I am. I was selfish and entitled. I think about all the people I’ve let down every single day, especially my family. All I can do is learn from my stupid mistakes to be a better man when I get released in a few years.”

The earliest Jared can leave prison is March 2029. He shares a young daughter and son with his ex-wife, Kathleen McLaughlin. 

Fogle will have a closely-monitored life following his release from prison

In his letter, Jared said he’s getting busy living and making the most of his prison experience but mentioned that he missed the basic luxuries of life outside prison. He wrote:

“Prison takes away so much but I really miss the small things – like walking barefoot on [a] carpet, sleeping on a nice, comfy mattress, eating with real silverware, having access to a microwave.”

Fogle will enjoy these luxuries after leaving prison but will never recover the freedom he had before incarceration. Per the terms of his plea deal, Fogle will participate in a treatment program for sexual disorders and become a registered sex offender. 

The agreement also bars Fogle from having any communication with a minor unless approved by his probation officer. Fogle’s probation officer will also have the authority to search his residence, business, office, and vehicle and monitor Jared’s use of electronic devices. 

After Fogle’s sentencing under the terms of the plea agreement, US attorney Josh J. Minkler stated that Fogle’s punishment sent a message to child exploiters. He said:

“Those who engage in child exploitation received a clear message today. If you engage in this conduct, you will be investigated, identified and prosecuted, and you will go to prison.”

Jared exploited children for sex and paid people to find minors for him to have sex with

The indictment against Jared Fogle stated that his exploitation of minors for sex started in 2007 and continued up to June 2015. 

Prosecutors alleged that in November 2012, Jared paid a 17-year-old to engage in sex acts at the Plaza Hotel In New York City. Several months later, he paid the same girl, who’d informed him of her age, for sex at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. 

Texts obtained by the FBI showed that Jared offered to pay the girl extra if she found him another girl to pay for sex. Fogle allegedly stated that ‘the younger the girl, the better.’

Jared also sent offers to other escorts, ‘soliciting them to provide him access to minors as young as 14 to 15 years.’ The indictment also claimed that Fogle received child pornography from Russell Taylor, the former director of the Jared Foundation. 

Documents from the prosecution alleged that Fogle knew that the people depicted in Taylor’s photos and videos were children. 

Jared started the defunct Jared Foundation to combat and raise awareness about childhood obesity. However, an investigation by USA Today found that the Jared Foundation misappropriated funds. Daniel Borochoff, president of CharityWatch, said:

“If Jared [were] really interested in helping children through his foundation, he could have gotten more money. As with a lot of celebrities, the charity appears to be more about image-enhancement than charitable deeds.”
