Where is Larry Ray today? His life in federal prison

Larry Ray was initially viewed as weird by Slonim Woods 9 dorm members in Sarah Lawrence College. Within a year, Larry, the father of one student in the dorm, had convinced some dorm members to move in with him in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. 

Larry told the students that he would improve their lives – he ended up being their worst nightmare. He manipulated, abused, extorted, and exploited the students for years. 

The Cut exposed Larry’s cult in April 2019, sparking an investigation that led to his arrest and incarceration. A jury found Larry Ray guilty of 15 federal charges, including sex trafficking and extortion. 

Larry is serving his 60-year sentence in federal prison

Larry Ray was sentenced by Judge Lewis Liman to spend 60 years in federal prison. His pleas for leniency fell on deaf ears, as Judge Liman described his conduct as ‘sadism’. 

“These three years I’ve spent in jail have been hell,” Larry said, trying to cast himself as the victim. Prosecutors pushed for a life sentence, stating that Larry ‘intentionally inflicted brutal and life-long harm on innocent victims that he groomed and abused into submission’. Prosecutors argued (per The Guardian):

“While the defendant’s victims descended into self-hatred, self-harm, and suicidal attempts under his coercive control, the evidence showed that the defendant took sadistic pleasure in their pain, and enjoyed the fruits of their suffering. He also enjoyed being cruel.”

“When his victims expressed anguish or guilt, he feigned sympathy and twisted the knife in deeper. He baited his victims to attempt suicide and then stymied their recoveries, while pretending to be the only one concerned with their wellbeing.”

Larry didn’t expect four of the victims he’d brainwashed for so long to testify against him. “We are in awe of their bravery in the face of trauma,” Damian Williams, the United States attorney in Manhattan, said in a statement.

The jury deliberated for four hours before convicting Larry of the 15 charges.
