Was Lisa Marie Presley sick? Her addiction struggles
Hours after Lisa Marie Presley and her mother, Priscilla, attended the Golden Globes, Priscilla announced that her daughter had been hospitalized. She wrote:
“My beloved daughter Lisa Marie was rushed to the hospital. She is now receiving the best care. Please keep her and our family in your prayers. We feel the prayers from around the world, and ask for privacy during this time.”
The whole world held its breath, hoping for a positive update from the Presley family. Unfortunately, Sam Mast, a representative for Priscilla, announced that Lisa Marie had died: “Priscilla Presley and the Presley family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Lisa Marie.”
Lisa Marie was not sick, but she struggled with addiction and grief
Lisa Marie was not sick when she reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest on 12th January 2023. TMZ reports that the housekeeper found her unresponsive in the bedroom. Marie’s ex-husband, Danny Keough, performed CPR while waiting for paramedics.
According to The New York Times, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said paramedics determined Lisa had signs of life and transported her to a local hospital. Lisa Marie died hours later.
Lisa Marie was not sick, but she faced many struggles. “Lisa did not have an easy life, as some might think,” actress Leah Remini wrote. “May she be at peace, resting with her son and father now.”
As a teenager, Lisa Marie experimented with sedatives, cocaine, pot, and alcohol. Thankfully, she overcame her dependence on drugs by age 17. Decades later, Lisa developed opioid addiction, which she battled in secret.
Lisa opened up about her struggles in the foreword to Harry Nelson’s 2015 book The United States of Opioids. Lisa said she grew dependent on opioids while recovering from the birth of her twin daughters, Vivienne and Finley. “As I write this, I think of my four children, who gave me the purpose to heal,” she wrote.
Lisa’s divorce from Michael Lockwood revealed the true extent of her drug addiction. She admitted to abusing alcohol, painkillers, cocaine, and opioids. “I was a mess,” she said during a 2017 deposition. “I couldn’t stop. The last year of our marriage, I was abusing cocaine terribly.”
After several stints in rehab, Lisa overcame her addictions. In 2020, tragedy struck the family – Benjamin, Lisa’s only son, committed suicide. In August 2022, Lisa wrote an article about her experience with grief:
“Grief does not stop or go away in any sense, a year, or years after the loss. Grief is something you will have to carry with you for the rest of your life, in spite of what certain people or our culture wants us to believe. You do not ‘get over it,’ you do not ‘move on,’ period.”
Michael Lockwood requested custody of the children, alleging that Benjamin’s suicide could’ve caused her to relapse. However, as far as we can tell, Lisa Marie remained sober.
