Top 4 places to visit in Rome

Rome is one of those places that you can visit multiple times and still see new things upon each visit. An epicentre of ancient culture and one of the best-preserved cities in the world, its proximity to founding of the Catholic Church and to some of the most celebrated cultural artifacts makes it must-do for people everywhere.

Whilst you’re there, there are places, cathedrals and landmarks that you absolutely have to see during your Italy tour.

Trevi Fountain

Easily the most famous fountain in the world, the Trevi Fountain was designed by Bernini for Pope Clemens XII. Standing tall in the middle of the city, the fountain has been commanding attention since 1762 and, to this day, remains a site of huge cultural significance.

Today, it is regularly used as a backdrop for highbrow fashion shows, as a popular proposal spot, and as a site to make wishes. Throwing in a coin at Trevi Fountain is traditional and promises that, one day, the person will return to Rome.

Forum Romanum

The ruins of the Forum Romanum are not to be missed. As one of the few buildings left standing after the city was irretrievably damaged by earthquakes in the 7th century, this ruin has to be one of the oldest in Rome.

To get there, you have to traverse one of the oldest and most famous roads in the whole of the city. The so-called ‘sacred street’ is lined with holy temples and shrines, building up to the main attraction which stands tall at the end. Take in the Forum from up high and hike Capitoline Hill; it’s especially magical at night.

Colosseum

Without a doubt the most famous ruin in the whole of Rome, the Colosseum is a huge amphitheatre that was built for the Flavian emperor Vespasian. Built to accommodate a huge crowd of 65,000 people, the main purpose was to entertain the population with gladiator battles and animal fights.

Often considered cruel and barbaric, the games were banned by Emperor Honorius in 404 CE and only wild animals were shown there. Then, in the Middle Ages, earthquakes eroded the Colosseum’s physical integrity, and were eventually stripped for stones as building material for other holy sites.

Sistine Chapel

At the end of your tour through the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel stands as a glittering monument to the unbelievable artistic talent of Michelangelo. The enormous domed ceiling details scenes from Jesus’ life and Michelangelo’s famous ‘Last Judgement’ painting.

Other than that, the chapel is a testament to the symbolism and cultural importance of the Catholic Church – nowhere else will you see so much gold and opulence. It is quite a sight to behold.
